MEASURES CONCERNING CULTIVATION AND TENDING OF PLANTATIONS.
The choice of different cultivation methods depends on various factors
influencing this type of plant production.
Application of cultivation and tending measures used in poplar plantations on the terrains exposed to floods is restricted by flood duration. In those parts of poplar plantations protected from floods, all tending and cultivation measures could be aplied depending on the production goal and plantation purposes.
The main cultivation and tending measures are: tillage, fertilization, irrigation and pruning.
In poplar plantations protected from floods, as well as in those plantations established on soil exposed to floods, regular tillage is performed during the first 5 / 6 years. On soil exposed to floods, we suggest to make a weeding with a rotary cultivator or a weed cutter and not a diskage or ploughing. Tillage with diskes is necessary during dry season against the ground cover (weed,graminales) in order to keep the freshness underground during july and august. Herbaceous can be controlled with a glyphosate solution.
Sprouts from stumps, as well as root suckers and some other woody weeds can be treated at the same time.
Sometimes, with the canopy formation, the ceasing of disking is possible.
The application of herbicides in poplar plantations is very
important the first two years on the poplar line (1 m around the feet).
